If you’re a fan of Ghost of Tsushima or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, PS5 gamers won’t want to miss this free playable demo, which has just received a major update ahead of the game’s full launch next week.
When it comes to capturing the atmosphere, combat and mystique of ancient Japan, few games do it better than Sucker Punch Productions’ Ghost of Tsushima and FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. However, long before either game arrived, Capcom was already delivering samurai action with its iconic Onimusha series.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword free demo gets major update ahead of full launch
The free playable demo for Onimusha: Way of the Sword launched on June 2, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
Even at launch, the demo offered a generous taste of what to expect from Capcom’s upcoming samurai action game, including a playable quest, an area to explore and an epic boss battle. It also featured save-data bonuses, with the Kubi Akari Charm and stat boosts carrying over to the full game.

Now, Capcom has expanded the Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo with a new content update featuring the boss battles against Ifuu and Burai, an “electrifying duo that conjures wind and thunder”.
The update is available across the existing platforms, while the demo has also made its debut on the Nintendo eShop for Switch 2, giving even more players the chance to experience a slice of the upcoming adventure.

Onimusha is one of Capcom’s most iconic classic franchises
The first game in Capcom’s iconic series, Onimusha: Warlords, was released in 2001, and the franchise has since spawned several sequels and spin-offs. However, Onimusha fans have had to be incredibly patient for a new mainline game, with the last original entry arriving way back in 2006 on PS2 with Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.
Interestingly, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams is enjoying something of a second life right now, with the underrated PS2 classic currently free with PlayStation Plus.
The first two games in the series, Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny, have also received modern remasters across multiple platforms.
So, whether you want to discover how the series began or rekindle your love for Capcom’s samurai classic ahead of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, now is the perfect time to revisit these games.
You can currently pick up a bundle that includes the remasters of Onimusha: Warlords and Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny on the PlayStation Store for £16.24/$19.49 instead of £32.49/$38.99.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released on September 4, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
