The community at large has pretty much universally decided that The Last of Us series is one of the best examples of narrative storytelling in video game history, and as such it feels a little bit weird to point out any flaws.
The single player experience features some incredible gameplay and great delivery of the game’s overall narrative arc across both games, with moments that hit home seemingly around every corner.
That said, it's an extremely isolating experience and that's part of the appeal for many, as the post-apocalyptic setting makes you feel alone until the infected make you feel very much not alone.
As such it would be nice if we could occasionally bring a real world friend along for the ride, and while that seems like a pipe dream, it might not be quite dead just yet.

The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Is Being Tested by Modders
Over on X (formerly Twitter), the user Speclizer has confirmed that they are testing out a series of modded changes for The Last of Us Part 2, that could make multiplayer possible in the beloved sequel in the relatively near-future.
“Don't know if this will turn out to be anything, but I've been playing with the idea of adding multiplayer to TLOU 2 on PC," the post reads.
"Here we can spawn clients and control them (locally only for now, as I'm just testing)."
Excited fans couldn’t hold back their enthusiasm at the idea of being able to play the beloved title with friends.
“Didn’t realise I’d ever want The Last of Us co-op. Even if the multiplayer got canned, a co-op standalone story DLC like Lost Legacy would go crazy.
“I knew those animations were good when I played the game, but seeing Ellie moving around from that distance while controlled, damn!” another added.
Without wishing to put a dampener on any potential excitement, there are a lot of potential pitfalls when it comes to getting this technology to work.
Specifically, the game was never designed to have two perspectives being rendered at the same time, and that unusual extra load for the engine could do plenty to destabilise the overall gaming experience.
Whatever does end up happening, I think we can all agree that it would be a very cool thing to see multiplayer The Last of Us turned into a reality.
Here’s hoping it happens before we’re all octogenarians.
