The new God of War spin-off, God of War Laufey, won’t be playable for millions of gamers and we’re not just talking about its PlayStation exclusivity.
PlayStation’s State of Play showcase brought some decent announcements with new games being teased as well as updates for existing ones.
Out of everything that was shown off though, God of War Laufey completely stole the show with over 20 minutes of gameplay footage.
Unfortunately, no release date was shared but we’re betting it’ll launch sometime in late 2027, if not early 2028.

God of War Laufey follows Faye shortly after she’s laid to rest by Kratos and Atreus at the start of God of War (2018). Rather than pass through to a peaceful afterlife, she instead finds herself caught in the middle of a large-scale conflict, headed by gods from various pantheons, including Egypt.

There’s also a gelatinous cube being played by The Boys star Jack Quaid…
The game looks ace and while we’re excited to one day play it there’s a big problem: millions are going to miss out.
To no one’s surprise, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 users aren’t going to be able to play the game but PlayStation 4 owners are going to miss out, too.
God of War Ragnarok was the final PlayStation first-party title to support both the old and new generation of consoles, so God of War Laufey will be the first truly new-gen title in the series.
Another platform that’ll presumably miss out is PC. Recently, PlayStation adjusted its plans for cross-platform support after its PC ports didn’t perform as well as the company had hoped.
Future first-party titles will presumably remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and eventually PlayStation 6, so if you were planning on waiting for God of War Laufey to come to PC, you’re probably out of luck there.
We’d imagine anyone interested in playing Grand Theft Auto VI on launch day will have already acquired a PlayStation 5 but if you’re yet to upgrade, now’s definitely the time to do so.
PlayStation 5 consoles have had numerous price increases and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it get another price-hike later this year or in 2027, to reflect current market behaviours.
If you’re on the hunt for a PlayStation 5 at a discount though, there are probably plenty of options out there if you’re willing to do a little digging.
God of War Laufey will presumably launch sometime in 2027 and while GTA VI is the reason to get a PlayStation 5 at the moment, we think the next God of War game will be a close second.
