GameStop has deployed a huge price hike for the PlayStation 5 Pro, that makes Sony’s PS5 Pro the most expensive it’s ever been, and that’s for a used console.
It’s no secret that video game consoles are more expensive than ever. Normally, as a console gets older and edges closer to the next generation, its price starts to drop. But nope, Gen 9 is having none of it.
A brand-new PS5 now costs $649.99 in the US and £569.99 in the UK, while the PS5 Pro has risen to $899.99 and £789.99, respectively. Unfortunately, at least in the US, PS5 Pro prices have gotten even more outrageous.
PS5 Pro costs over $600 more than a brand-new console
A leaked document was making the social media rounds stating that GameStop is preparing to sell used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles for a whopping $1,399. Again, that’s for a “used” console and not a brand-new console fresh out of the box from the factory.
However, those rumours have since proven to be true, because the huge price hike on used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles has been officially confirmed on the GameStop website. But hey, at least “Pro” members can get it at a discounted $1329.99. What a bargain!
Why is GameStop charging $1,400 for a used PS5 Pro?
GameStop hasn't explained why it's decided to sell used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles for so much. The easiest assumption would be that it’s motivated by pure corporate greed and to capitalise on gamers desperate to buy a PS5, no matter the cost.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that this price does not include a disc drive or vertical stand. A brand new disc drive has an RRP of $79.99 and the vertical stand is $29.99. So, if you wanted those two items included, the price then bumps up to a mind-boggling $1,508.98.
It also feels very convenient that this huge price hike on used PlayStation 5 Pro consoles comes just over a month away from the launch of the highly anticipated GTA VI. GameStop could blame industry shortages, but many will understandably be very sceptical if that were the sole reason for the price hike on a used console.
It’s fair to say that GameStop’s used price on the PlayStation 5 Pro has well and truly entered scalper territory. In GameStop’s defence, the trade-in value for the PS5 Pro has risen to $850, but the $549 pure profit feels wrong on so many levels.

What is the community saying about the used price hike?
“People have lost their damn minds if they buy it for this price,” said Reddit user Loose_Society9485.
“You know hustle/scalper culture has reached terminal cancer and needs to die when you see s**** like this,” exclaimed Animegamingnerd.
“We aren't as scared for the future of gaming as we should be,” warned Due-Ad4970.
Let’s just hope this new level of corporate greed doesn’t spread to other regions or carry over into the next generation. But if we’re being honest, I think most of us would be surprised if other companies didn’t eventually follow suit.
