PlayStation Plus users are getting a free membership extension starting from today, giving you extra time to play online or access those monthly games you all love so much.

PlayStation users on PS5 and PS4 were shocked to see a large PSN outage affecting the whole network in February.

For about 24 hours, players were unable to play online or access the PlayStation store. What's worse is it happened on a weekend too.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle finally has a release date on PS5!

It was the first major PSN blackout since the 2011 incident, in which the entire network across PS3 and PSP was hacked, and users’ data were compromised.

In response, Sony took down PSN while it fixed the vulnerabilities.

The 2011 outage lasted for 23 days while Sony recovered. If you’re a person who loves playing online, that was a long time to wait for the servers to come back online.

When they eventually did, Sony compensated PlayStation users by offering two PS3 games and two PSP games for free to all users, from a selected list.

While the PSN outage in February this year wasn’t anywhere near as bad as 2011, Sony is still stepping up to offer compensation to affected users.

If you’ve checked your email this week, you’ll see that Sony is sending out confirmation emails with an extension of five days to your PlayStation Plus membership, regardless of which tier you are on.

That’s five free days you’ll be able to play online, access PlayStation Plus deals, and play the games available in the PS Plus library.

These changes actually came into effect last month, as some eagle-eyed users spotted, but now Sony is sending out emails to confirm that this has occurred.

“We appreciate your patience during the recent PlayStation Network outage,” the email reads. “As a token of our appreciation, we’ve automatically extended your PlayStation Plus membership by five days, no action is needed on your part."

It continues, "Thanks for being a valued PlayStation Plus member."

If you’re unsure about whether you have a free PlayStation Plus five-day extension, be sure to check your email inbox for an email from Sony.
