Free Marvel Game on PlayStation is Upsetting Players

This free-for-all isn't quite as free for all as people were hoping

Those excited to jump into the latest Marvel game have been running into a spot of trouble this weekend (and it’s all Sony’s fault).

I don’t think I’m more excited for any other game at the moment than Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Alright, well, maybe Slay the Spire 2, but it’s in the top two at least.

There are two very specific reasons I’m hyped for this one. Firstly, it’s being developed by Arc System Works, who are the best fighting game developers of all time (do not argue with me, I am right). They're the wizards behind the likes of Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Strive, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle.

Secondly, it’s a Marvel fighting game. The hole left in my heart by the death of Marvel vs. Capcom needs to be filled somehow, and this is as close to MvC5 as we’re ever going to get at this point.

Unfortunately, the game doesn’t drop until next year. Boo. However, there’s a free closed beta test going on right now! Yay!

Uh, well– actually, it’ll have probably just ended by the time this article goes live. Don’t worry about missing out though, because you probably wouldn’t have been able to play it anyway!

That’s because, as detailed in an article by Sports Illustrated's Daniyal Malik, barely anyone has been able to get their hands on an invite code.

Even though the game is coming to both PlayStation 5 and PC next year, the closed beta for Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls has been a PlayStation-exclusive affair (likely because it’s being published by Sony Interactive Entertainment).

This, coupled with the fact that a seemingly very limited number of invite codes went out, means that a lot of folks already completely missed their chance to try the game out.

And, uh, not to rub it in or anything but… I did get to try it myself, and it’s very fun, so I understand why people are a little upset.

Hopefully, the next closed beta will be on PC too, because I want to beat up my PC-only mates online too. C’mon, Sony– stop hogging the beta access.
