The first Tomb Raider game for the PlayStation 1 has been given a huge boost in graphical fidelity thanks to an RTX mod.

While the controls have aged horribly over the years, the first Tomb Raider games are still a lot of fun and worth checking out if you’re interested in seeing some of Lara Croft’s first adventures.

Check out the trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider remasters below

The games are set to be remastered soon by Crystal Dynamics as part of a trilogy collection. While these won’t be full-on remakes of the games they will look significantly better than the originals thanks to some touch-ups of the textures and framerate. They’ll also benefit from additional control schemes, making them slightly more bearable on modern platforms.

The collection is set to launch in February, though in the meantime fans will want to check out this gorgeous mod for the first Tomb Raider game on PC.

It’s currently a work in progress by the YouTuber, skurtyyskirts, and is currently unavailable to try yourself, though hopefully when the mod is finished a public version will be made available to download.

The modder has documented their journey so far with a few videos, as well as several in-game screenshots showing what they’ve been working on, and it looks magnificent so far. In terms of the graphics the OG Tomb Raider games never looked terrible, though it’s safe to say PlayStation 1 games don’t tend to age gracefully.

This mod fixes this issue by introducing some beautiful lighting effects, including ray tracing, which gives a whole new feel to the game. Whether it be outside in the snowy tundra from the first level, or inside one of the many exotic temples, the mod perfectly illuminates the gameplay and is impressive for an in-progress build.

Honestly, the worst part is this isn’t what the official remasters will look like, as fans will have to make do with some partial changes to the look of the game, and the aforementioned tweaks to the controls. That being said it’s better than nothing, I’m just happy the OG games are making a comeback on modern platforms.
