Skyrim has a new free quest to download and try out, and it sounds like a perfect one for the lore enthusiasts.

Bethesda may have stopped releasing official content for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim years ago, but that hasn’t stopped modders from extending the game’s lifespan.

New quests, followers, weapons and spells are added to the game via mods every day, and it’s turned Skyrim from a long game into a forever game.

At least, that's until The Elder Scrolls 6 finally gets released.

Some of the new quests in particular can really feel like a part of the main game, despite the fact they’re created by users unaffiliated with Bethesda.

These quests can add to the lore and expand the world of Tamriel in unexpected ways, just like the new 'Once We Were Here' questline does.

'Once We Were Here' focuses on Falmer scholar Sillas, who can be encountered at various historical sites around Skyrim and Solstheim.

As you encounter him, you’ll learn more of the story of the Snow Elves and their tragic descent into the Falmer.

In addition to the questline, which delivers the story to you in bite-sized chunks, there are a few other features available with the mod.

For starters, Sillas is a fully-voiced character with his own dialogue and backstory.

Not only does he have interesting lines related to the quest, but his speech is also dynamically tailored to your own discoveries regarding the Falmer in the base game questlines.

So it should be a great mod to download for anyone invested in the Falmer storyline, or has an ongoing playthrough which has already encountered them.

The mod can be downloaded mid-playthrough with no problems, and is about 70MB in size. So it’s not a large investment to download.

To start the quest, find Sillas at the Altar of Xrib. It’s an unmarked location found atop the snowy mountain near Sightless Pit in Winterhold.

As for console availability, mod author nimwraith has already given permission for the quest to be ported to Xbox. As of yet, there’s no confirmation on when this will be done, though.

You can download 'Once We Were Here' from NexusMods.
