Skyrim players can now download a brand new free quest which acts as a throwback to a game from earlier in The Elder Scrolls franchise.
Players of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition can now download The Dragonknight of Daggerfall, a brand new mod for the game which adds a new quest to complete.
The new quest added with the mod is quite short, but adds a lot of lore to Skyrim which connects the game with The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall.
The quest begins in Markarth, where after reading a note warning of a renegade Dragonknight, you can choose to investigate these rumours which leads you to a duel against the titular Dragonknight, as well as his Fire Wyrm companion that he’s summoned.

If you’re able to survive the duel, you can also keep the Fire Wyrm for yourself as your own personal summon.
The Renegade Dragonknight is described as “far more dangerous than your average bandit”, and is a level 28 boss making him pretty tough if you haven’t levelled up too far just yet. He fights with both blades and spells, so you need to approach him with caution.

The Dragonknight of Daggerfall features a return of the Knights of the Dragon, a faction which first appeared in The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. The faction basically acts as servants for the King of Daggerfall, who is referred to as the Dragon.
Although they would later return in The Elder Scrolls Online’s Orsinium expansion pack, mod creator Alana102 found it odd that none ever appear in Skyrim, the Elder Scrolls game which is all about dragons.
The mod also includes lore connecting the two games through the Thalmor, going into further detail regarding their actions in High Rock during the events of Skyrim.
Alana102 also made the mod because they thought that the Fire Wyrm added in the Dragonborn DLC for Skyrim was “extremely cool”, but since it required completing a Black Book and picking Dragonborn Flame over the much better Dragonborn Frost, it almost never appears.
The Dragonknight of Daggerfall is Alana102’s seventh mod created for Skyrim Special Edition. Previously, they had published Legend of the Frozen North, a quest where you follow a legendary Nord hero into the far north reaches of Skyrim.
They’re also responsible for the Civil War Reinforcements mod, which allows you to call in backup from your civil war faction of choice to help you during battle, fixing up a little bit of the jank found in the game’s vanilla side questline.
The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall was released in 1996 for MS-DOS, and was set in the Iliac Bay, between the provinces of High Rock and Hammerfell in Tamriel.
Although Daggerfall is not as popular as the later games in the Elder Scrolls series, it is largely notable for having one of the largest in-game worlds of any video game, featuring over 15,000 cities, towns, and dungeons to explore, with the total lore-accurate size of the game world coming to around 230,000 square kilometres.
For context, Skyrim’s map was scaled down to only around 6 kilometres wide, allowing Bethesda to fill it with interesting locations without making the map feel empty and dull.
Still, even though 95% of Daggerfall’s map was empty or reused content, it was still a really cool novelty at the time.
