One of the PlayStation 2’s best trilogies is now available in its entirety on PC, for free too.

Retro games deserve more love and recognition and the best way to give it to them is to ensure they’re available to play for many more years to come.

While it’s easier to wait for developers and publishers to remaster or re-release these titles, a better option is porting them to PC. This doesn’t just help preserve the games but can also enhance them for reasons we’ll get into shortly.

This week is especially exciting, as arguably the best trilogy on the PlayStation 2 can now enjoy all the benefits of PC play, and hopefully send gamers on a trip down memory lane.

Naughty Dog’s Dynamic Duo

That’s right, the entire Jak & Daxter trilogy can now be run natively on your PC.

For those who aren’t aware, a fan-made and led project known as openGOAL has been hard at work bringing these iconic platformers to PC.

It’s been months and months in the making but now all three are ready to go, which doesn’t just mean they’re playable. The trilogy now benefits from 4K visuals, a boosted framerate and it can of course be modded at your leisure.

One especially crazy mod we saw was one that turned the first Jak & Daxter game into a Half-Life level, which saw Gordon Freeman tearing his way across Misty Island at breakneck speeds. It was pretty wild.

These games are loved by so many gamers so it’s nice to see them get this special treatment, and even nicer to know there’ll be plenty of new players enjoying these games at their very best.

Now all we need is a remake. One was actually going to be pitched to Sony but for whatever reason nothing came from it.

A remade cutscene exists online though giving you an idea of what it could have been like, and it’s honestly heartbreaking to know we’ll probably never see much more of it.

It doesn’t sound like Naughty Dog plans to revisit the series anytime soon either. At the time of writing its next game is Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet but there are also some teases for both The Last of Us Part 3 and Uncharted 5.

For now Jak & Daxter stays in limbo, but in a way we already have our remastered trilogy on PC now.
