The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has just received a whopping 40 new quests, completely free for you to check out.

Skyrim remains one of the biggest games of all time, and given the amount of content, it’s pretty normal to keep replaying it with new characters, over and over again.

With so many potential characters for you to roleplay as, it’s a bit of a shame that the base version of Skyrim always starts with the exact same Helgen sequence. Maybe you don’t want to play as someone who starts out as a prisoner.

Thanks to the power of modding, that’s where this new expansion comes in. Skyrim modder JaySerpa has created Why I Came To Skyrim, a new way for you to start a fresh character.

Why I Came To Skyrim adds 40 new quests to the game that are intended to establish your character from the beginning. Think of it as like the origin stories from Dragon Age: Origins, which occur before the main quest even kicks into gear.

After installing the mod, you’ll be assigned a starter quest at random. This quest will be your character’s origin, but if you’re unhappy with the selection then you can pick another by interacting with the Book of Origins.

'Why I Came To Skyrim' Adds Lots of New Starter Content

All quests have their own journal entries, objectives, and narratives. They’re open-ended, so they work no matter what race, gender, or class you choose to play as. For example, there won’t be any that force you to play like a rogue or an archer.

These stories also don’t have to be completed immediately, as some are more intended to be completed over the course of your opening few hours in Skyrim.

They also use the Radiant system, meaning some locations of items, NPCs, and enemies may be randomised.

For example, one quest might have you searching a certain location for an item, while another will have you seek out a character. Your character has a debuff called “Unfinished Business” to encourage you to complete it, but you’re not forced to immediately do that if you don’t want to.

JaySerpa has stressed that this mod isn’t intended as a replacement for Alternate Start, the classic Skyrim mod which also allows you to freely choose where you begin the game. In fact, Why I Came To Skyrim is intended to work alongside Alternate Start.

If you’d like to check out Why I Came To Skyrim, you can download it now from Nexus Mods for the PC version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – Special Edition.
