A new fan-made remaster for Batman: Arkham Asylum is making the rounds online, and it looks like a perfect excuse to return to Gotham City.
Originally released in 2009, Batman: Arkham Asylum quickly became one of the most popular superhero games of its time thanks to its fluid combat, excellent story and jaw-dropping visuals.
For those who really wanted to fulfil the fantasy of being Batman, there was really no better alternative, which allowed the game to become one of the best games of that console generation.
17 years later (I can’t believe it’s been that long), the game still remains an absolute classic, but fans have often wondered what a modern reboot or remaster of the game could look like.

That’s where YouTuber RRe36 steps in, who has been working on an Arkham Asylum remaster project in Unreal Engine 4 for quite some time.
Unlike other Unreal Engine remake fan projects, which tend to be just scenes from games that are given a new lick of paint, RRe36’s intention is for this to be a fully playable version of Arkham Asylum in a new engine.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Remaster Looks Absolutely Gorgeous
As the creator demonstrates, the project began a few years ago when they pulled assets from the Batman: Arkham games and placed them into Unreal Engine 4.

RRe36 then decided to add mechanics and systems from the game, eventually landing on a rough but playable build that encompasses a lot of the original gameplay, such as grappling, stealth, and combat.
In the latest update video, released back in November, RRe36 demonstrates some of the new features they’ve added to the remaster in recent updates. This includes a modern-looking menu screen, some costumes, and then a lengthy look at the combat.
Check the video out for yourself below, it’s really a wonderful piece of work, especially for a fan developer project made by one person.

If you’re wondering what RRe36’s plans are for the final version of the remaster, be warned that they do not plan on remaking the entire game. Rather, they’re just remaking the parts they find interesting for now.
Either way, I’m looking forward to seeing more of this in the future. And hopefully it works up enough appetite from fans that it convinces Warner Bros. to give Rocksteady another shot at making a new Batman: Arkham game.
It’s been over a decade since Arkham Knight, we’re ready!
