A Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time player discovers that you can skip one of the most frustrating segments in the game, for a price.
Firstly, let’s address the elephant in the room. The most difficult section of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is, for me, without question, the Water Temple. I don’t make the headlines, so don’t come at me.
Originally released in 1998 on the Nintendo 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is considered to be one of the best video games of all time, as reflected by its near-perfect 99 score on the aggregate website, Metacritic, solidifying its legendary status.
Over the years, Ocarina of Time has been ported to the Nintendo GameCube, the 3DS and more recently, it’s playable on the Nintendo Switch consoles with an active subscription to the Online + Expansion Pack.

There’s no question that Ocarina of Time is showing its age, even when being played on the Nintendo Switch 2. After all, at the time of writing, it is 27 years old. But there’s no denying that it will forever be an all-time great.
So it’s understandable that to this very day, fans can never get enough of the mystical version of the Hyrule Kingdom that Ocarina of Time offers. However, what may come as a surprise is that players are still making discoveries, such as the one featured in this article.
You Can Pay the Guard to do What?
“After 27 years, I just found out you can pay your way into Hyrule Castle after being caught,” revealed Redditor Ok-Adeptness-9973.
I’ve played Ocarina of Time tons of times. It’s my second favourite game in the series after The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES. But I can’t remember ever knowing about this.
To be fair, it’s been years since I’ve played Ocarina of Time, and the chances are, once I got caught attempting to get into Hyrule Castle to find Princess Zelda, there’s a good chance that I would have attempted that again, rather than thinking to pay the guard at the gate.
At the very least, if you did know about this trick but, like me, you have a memory of a goldfish at times, this can be a friendly reminder that once caught, you dont have to sneak into the castle on your second attempt. Happy days!
Now, Nintendo, if you could kindly announce a brand new game in The Legend of Zelda series to give me the perfect excuse to save up for a Nintendo Switch 2, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
