Fulfilling a pledge Nintendo made years ago.

Nintendo has revealed more information about the upcoming Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream, including that the game will feature a non-binary gender and same sex relationships.

Releasing on 16 April, 2026, Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream will allow you to create an island populated by various Miis, where they can participate in various activities.

One of these features includes the ability for Miis for form relationships and fall in love with a diverse number of characters.

These Miis can vary in gender, with male and female options present as earlier entries in the series have done. However, the option for your Mii to be non-binary is also now present in the game.

Nintendo has also revealed that your Miis can have “dating preferences”, presented with three gender options: male, female, and non-binary. Players can tick a box to allow their Mii to prefer dating none, one, two, or all three genders present in the game.

Nintendo Pledged To Be More Inclusive Following Backlash To Tomodachi Life On 3DS

This decision was made following backlash to Tomodachi Life on 3DS, which didn’t feature same-sex relationships or non-binary genders at all in the game. Instead, a binary male or female choice was forced on all characters.

A rumour circulated that same-sex relationships were patched out of the game at launch, as it was considered a ‘bug’. This isn’t true, but players ended up changing their character’s appearance to look more masculine or feminine, so they could appear to be in same-sex relationships.

Following this backlash, Nintendo promised to be more inclusive in its next game in the Tomodachi Life series, saying that it “never intended to make any form of social commentary” at the time, but later apologised for these comments afterwards.

It then stated that if there was to be a third game in the series, the developer would “strive to design a gameplay experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players”.

This appears to be the case for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, which now allows players to essentially be heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, asexual or pansexual, which will better reflect a more diverse selection of the population.

Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream will release for Nintendo Switch (and Nintendo Switch 2 via backwards compatibility) on 16 April, 2026.
