Super Smash Bros is one of Nintendo’s most lucrative franchises, and the next entry could be in development as we speak.
Back in 2018 Super Smash Bros Ultimate was released for the Nintendo Switch and its name wasn’t an exaggeration.
It was the biggest and best Smash Bros game to date and it was only bolstered by its DLC, adding characters fans have been waiting to see join the roster for years as well as some unexpected surprises.
You’d be forgiven for thinking 'how on Earth could Nintendo top this?' - and you wouldn’t be the only one.

That said a new Super Smash Bros game feels inevitable and following a recent update from the legendary Masahiro Sakurai fans are convinced one is currently in the works.
Recently Masahiro Sakurai and his team finalised their work on Kirby AIr Riders, the unexpected sequel to the bizarre Nintendo GameCube racing game that has more in common with Smash Bros than Mario Kart.

Following a successful launch many were quick to ask if any DLC was planned, but Sakurai has confirmed that nothing is in the works and the development team will soon be disbanding to work on other projects.
This has understandably sparked rumours that Sakurai will now be starting work on the next Super Smash Bros game, with Kirby Air Riders acting as a creative reset in-between entries.
While I’m sad to hear there’ll be no new characters or courses coming to Kirby Air Riders this does get me really excited for the future, and you should be too.
With the power of the Nintendo Switch the next Smash Bros game could be something truly special, but the question persists on how they’ll improve upon the perfection of Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
The Next Super Smash Bros Game
The obvious answer is to simply re-release Super Smash Bros Ultimate for the Nintendo Switch 2.
An enhanced port of the game that maybe adds a new mode or better yet new characters would likely tide fans over until they got something more substantial.
It’s the roster that’s the biggest hurdle, as Super Smash Bros Ultimate’s main selling point was “Everyone Is Here”, so if the next game goes back to a limited character roster there will definitely be some backlash.
Personally I’m hoping the next Super Smash Bros game takes a page out of Super Smash Bros Brawl’s book and gives us another singleplayer story mode.
