Nobody was expecting Stardew Valley to get an upgrade on Nintendo Switch 2, least of all the dedicated fans who have invested hundreds of hours into the game.

However, during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, it was revealed that not only is Stardew Valley getting that upgrade, but it’s bringing some banging features with it.

Four player co-op is on the menu via online play, but it’s also headlining couch co-op too, and can be played via Game Share.

We’re not expecting much in increased performance, given the game’s pixel graphics and relatively low need for any kind of power.

But, this new update will usher in quality of life improvements, as well as take advantage of the Switch 2’s mouse controls, bringing the feel of the PC counterpart to the Nintendo console.

Understandably, fans are thrilled, and over on Reddit, many of them are surprised to see such a big upgrade arrive, particularly as it’s completely free outside of Japan.

This has players praising Eric Barone, the creator, with messages like, “Just another reason why he’s the best.

“Stardew Valley on Game Share is gonna be amazing!” exclaimed one fan.

While another praised the new control method, saying, “It having mouse support is personally huge for me. That was one thing that kept me playing the PC version over my Switch version.”

Most of the praise is focused on the fact that the update is free, something that seems to be a rarity on the Switch 2.

“This is actually really refreshing considering how much Nintendo is increasing the prices on everything,” comments this Redditor.

There’s no exact release date as yet, with the trailer during the Nintendo Direct simply stating a ‘Fall’ window, which has fans champing at the bit.

“One of the highlights of the Direct,” proclaims an enthusiastic player.
