The Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 have been updated for the holiday season and gamers are convinced it’s a precursor for one of the consoles most sorely needed features.
Christmas is right around the corner and yesterday Nintendo announced its end of year sale, bringing enormous discounts on games both past and present.
It’s a great sale for those wanting to pick up a few of the highlights of The Game Awards, with discounts on titles like Hades 2 for instance.
While the sales are great though Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 owners are more interested in the snazzy new Christmas theme that’s now taken over the eShop.

With Christmas decorations, unique artwork and gorgeous colouring it looks splendid and a vast improvement over the eShop’s generic appearance. We’d love it to look like this all year round and fans are convinced that’s exactly what Nintendo is leading towards.

We’ve been begging for customisable themes since the Nintendo Switch first released and many thought the launch of Nintendo Switch 2 would be the day we finally get them. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case as we’re still stuck with either a light or dark theme for the home screen.
This update does change things though as many believe it’s being used as “a beta test for themes.”
“We are one step closer to having themes. I wished it was there when we had the option at the start” added another.
We should probably temper our expectations but it’s been nearly a decade since the launch of the Nintendo Switch, so surely Nintendo has to start listening to us eventually.
“Imagine having to beg and plead for something that was a thing years ago on a HANDHELD! Something that the switch is a hybrid of!! But yes let’s take these crumbs like we always do as Ninty fans” read one of the other comments.
So far the only current Nintendo product that you can customise is the mobile app Nintendo Today, which features themes from a small selection of Nintendo IPs like Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon and Kirby.
As someone who grew up with the Nintendo Wii's Mii Creator and the customisable backgrounds of the Nintendo 3DS adding themes to the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 is a no-brainer, and I’m shocked it hasn’t been done already. Hopefully 2026 is the year we finally get them.
