Nintendo confirms when we'll be saying goodbye to the OG Switch

It's a long way off

The launch of a new console doesn’t immediately spell doom for its predecessor.

It’s always been the case that previous-generation consoles are well supported for at least a couple of years after their replacement is launched.

You need only look to the PlayStation 4 to see evidence of that.

Despite the PlayStation 5 launching in 2020, almost five years ago, it’s only in January 2026 that Sony is set to stop its offering of PlayStation 4 titles on the PlayStation Plus subscription service.

While this is something that has caused some upset, PlayStation 4 users have done pretty well to remain included this deep into the PS5’s life cycle.

It’s with all of this in mind that you don’t need to worry about the Nintendo Switch becoming obsolete when the Nintendo Switch 2 is released later this year.

Take a look at the Nintendo Switch 2’s reveal below.

While many of us are keen to get our pre-orders in for the Nintendo Switch 2, not everybody will be snapping up the console.

After all, gaming is not a cheap hobby and individual budgets may not stretch to cover the price of a brand new bit of kit.

Thankfully, those who, for now, are staying put with the current generation needn’t feel any worry as Nintendo has offered some welcomed words of reassurance.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa recently spoke to Japanese newspaper Sankei (Thanks for the spot TweakTown), explaining that the OG Switch will be supported “as long as there is demand”.

So there you have it, as long as plenty of you are using the OG Switch, it’ll remain supported.

Inevitably, there’ll come a day when the OG Switch is used by only a small cohort of people and that support is ended but that day doesn’t look set to land anytime soon.

In fact, Furukawa isn’t concerned about those who don’t wish to upgrade, adding that, “We don’t think the impact of refraining from purchasing is that great”.

If you are looking ahead to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, don’t forget that the console’s Direct is due to be held on 2 April.
