Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker Players Can Finally Explore Hyrule, Unflooded

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker players finally have a look at an unflooded Hyrule, and it’s bizarre.

As every The Legend of Zelda fan knows, The Wind Waker is set on the Great Sea, a massive ocean that formed following a huge flood that submerged almost the entire land of Hyrule underwater.

It means that the islands you visit in The Wind Waker are actually the peaks of many of Hyrule’s various mountains, where the residents of the kingdom fled to avoid the Great Flood.

Now, one big Zelda fan has unflooded the world, revealing what The Wind Waker’s version of Hyrule looks like without all the massive bodies of water getting in the way.

The project, titled “Wind Waker: Unflooded”, is estimated to be about 45% complete. Judging from the video linked below, it seems that all the important places from Hyrule can be found in their de-watered state.

The video begins by showing us Outset Island, before the water is removed revealing additional crevices and paths that assumedly would have been a part of the mountain before it became an island.

A few more familiar places, such as the bridge going across Lake Hylia, Death Mountain and, of course, Hyrule Castle, appear in the video relative to where they appear in-game, just without all the flooding.

This 3D interpretation of Wind Waker’s Hyrule is based on a fan map, titled “Lost Kingdom” by MrJmZack on DeviantArt.

Although Nintendo has never provided official documentation on this, it’s good to see that fans have taken it into their own hands to provide a bit more exposition for Hyrule’s whereabouts during the events of The Wind Waker.

Altogether, it’s a pretty cool project and something I’m excited to see expanded upon in future updates. Who knows, maybe Nintendo will take notes for a potential Wind Waker sequel (please, Aonuma?).
