A classic Nintendo game from 2001 is getting some new content, and it won’t even cost you a penny.
Nintendo is on a roll with its current lineup of Switch 2 games available right now. With Mario Kart World, Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and Donkey Kong Bananza to enjoy, there’s something for everyone.
But that doesn’t mean we can’t still look back to the classics that made Nintendo a household name in the first place.
We may not have had a new Luigi’s Mansion title in a while, but the original 2001 classic is still interesting gamers, particularly those who want their Nintendo games to be a little more spooky than normal.

For fans of the original, a new expansion is planned for release next year and will feature brand new content for the game’s 25th anniversary.

What is Luigi's Mansion Project LMDE?
Created by modder Slugmotif, Project LMDE is an upcoming mod for Luigi’s Mansion which adds four new areas, with each one being “like a thematically unique, confined segment”.

It also sounds like there’ll be a roguelike element to it as well, as Slugmotif notes that “every playthrough will be different” that encourages lots of repeat playthroughs.
It’s also intended to run on original hardware as opposed to emulators, so you should be able to play this expansion on a modded GameCube or Wii if you have the capability to do so.
Check out the trailer for Project LMDE below. As Slugmotif notes, the trailer only explores Area 1 for the time being. Presumably, the other areas aren’t finished yet, or Slugmotif would prefer to keep them aside as a surprise.

As for when you can expect to play Project LMDE, Slugmotif hopes to have the expansion out by Winter 2026.
“Unfortunately, I'm just a guy making a game,” the modder writes in the Project LMDE Q&A. “I don't have any funding, or a team I'm directly working with, so delays are always possible. I do want to emphasize that it's really happening this time.
“In 2022 I created a mod in three months for a contest. It wasn't my best work but it taught me a lot about making actual gameplay and managing my time. Most of the old LMDE trailers were honestly just smoke and mirrors, but now I know what I'm doing!”
Slugmotif notes that project updates are planned to happen every few months to show off new content, so we should expect the next update to the project to occur early next year.
