Baldur’s Gate 3 may have won GOTY 2023, but Hogwarts Legacy won at being the best-selling game since GTA V. At least in the UK, that is.

We should also add the caveat that these stats refer to single-player games, meaning the likes of Call of Duty, etc aren’t included. Still, it’s a massive title to claim, especially since FIFA has been dominating this position for the last decade.

Have you lived the unwritten tale of Hogwarts Legacy?

Although it’ll surprise no one to read that the PlayStation 5 version of the game was the most successful, the Nintendo Switch version came in third, a surprising turn of events for those who doubted Nintendo’s handheld could handle such a big RPG.

The news that Hogwarts Legacy is the best-selling title comes after it was crowned the most popular 2023 game by Google back in early December; so many people were searching for the game that it quickly overtook other titles.

In total, the Harry Potter-inspired experience has sold 12.76 million boxed units of the game in the UK alone. Despite doing better in the UK than elsewhere, Hogwarts Legacy has dominated the US as well, with it coming only second to Modern Warfare 3 when the stats were last checked in November 2023.

Considering how many Harry Potter fans boycotted the game due to J.K. Rowling’s apparent transphobia, it’s impressive that the game has managed to win so many over, some of whom originally said they’d never play the game.

One could say it’s nothing short of magic…

You can view the Gfk data for yourselves below, though keep in mind that these numbers will shift as the days and weeks progress.

Nonetheless, while Hogwarts Legacy may move down a place or two (like it has this week), it’s still done something that only GTA V has managed to do. We can only imagine what a sequel to the game will achieve upon its release.
