Skill trees are becoming far too common in new games, and fans are getting sick of them, believing they’re often forced in unnecessarily.

We all know what a skill tree is, and we all know that they’re hamfisted into just about every game nowadays, like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 which has three skill trees in total, one for Peter, one for Miles and one that’s shared between the two of them.

Most of the time they give players a variety of options to enhance their gameplay and make their character stronger. This could include learning a new move, buffing their health or stamina and or making something in the game world happen more frequently, like the chance to use a super move.

They’ve been a gaming staple for years now, though it seems gamers are finally getting tired of seeing them in games. After all, while they can unlock some good stuff for your character the best parts are often buried all the way to the bottom of the tree. This means you have to grind XP or fulfil other requirements, meticulously working your way down the tree to whatever ability or upgrade you actually want.

Several Reddit threads have been made complaining about them, like one from hagg3n which described them as “big numbers, fantastical gear and glitter everywhere,” going on to say the miss the time when RPG games were more simple, equipping players with armour and a weapon and letting them go at it.

Another post from FoxOperator called them a “tragedy.” It went on to say the powers or abilities you unlock are often “boring” and “aren’t even skills,” they’re just normal things that the player character should already be able to do but is locked to pad out the game length.

Finally one more post from Klopapop said they’re sick of them too, and that they just want to “play the damn game. I don't want to fiddle around with skills.”

The sad part is they’re definitely not going anywhere, they’re far too easy to implement into game and enures players don’t blitz through one too quickly.
