The next FIFA game is rumoured to be developed by 2K Games, as part of efforts to work with multiple partners for future entries.

Despite their quality apparently dipping over the years, the FIFA games haven’t lost their popularity. Football fans still adore the game despite its faults for its online mode, collecting their favourite players and generally enjoying the sport whenever they like in their own homes. That being said the series has undergone a variety of changes over the years, with EA no longer possessing the licence to make new FIFA games, instead going forward with their own football games like EA Sports FC 24.

The FIFA organisation has said in the coming years it “‘intends to work with a range of partners” when it comes to making new games, and it’s rumoured the next developer giving it a go will be 2K Games.

2K Games is obviously famous for a number of sports franchises, most famously NBA 2K and WWE 2K.

The rumour started with notable leaker Kurakasis, who teased the potential collaboration on Twitter saying: “My favourite FIFA game, 2K2, oops, 2002 FIFA World Cup.” When the post started to pick up steam Kurakasis said they don’t know for sure if 2K is making the next FIFA game, and that it’s an “old rumour.”

That being said, there’s certainly interest in adding FIFA to its portfolio of 2K sport series. In an interview with IGN, 2K Games’ publisher CEO, Strauss Zelnick said: “‘We’re definitely interested in expanding our opportunities in sports, and FIFA has a great brand and incredible clout, but we have no current plans to discuss.”

Whether it happens or not remains to be seen, but if a FIFA 2K is indeed in the works it could lead to some exciting developments for fans of the series.
