Assassin's Creed 2 fans agree game has 'aged like fine wine'

Assassin’s Creed II has aged surprisingly well according to fans, with many saying the game still holds up in most areas.

It seems Assassin’s Creed is on its redemption arc thanks to the latest game, Assassin’s Creed Mirage taking the series back to its roots. The RPG-style games, while decent, failed to impress the majority of fans leading to the series refocusing its gameplay on stealth and actual assassinations.

That being said, fans still believe the peak of the series is, and will always be, Assassin’s Creed II, due to its wonderful open world, the best story ever told in gaming, and of course, Ezio, everyone’s favourite protagonist.

One fan, RavenPhoenix__ on Reddit, sung the game’s praises, much to the agreement of fans who still hold it in high-regard nearly 15 years after its release.

They said: “I've been playing Assassin's Creed II and I've gotta say that this game has aged like fine wine … The cities are all atmospheric and very detailed for the era. And I'm surprised at how densely populated Florence is. While the combat has aged the most, it's still very fun and satisfying pulling off combos. And the music is so f******* good, genuinely a 10/10 soundtrack. It just makes me sad how far Ubisoft has fallen.”

Fellow fans agreed, saying while the game has noticeably aged in some areas, it’s still a hell of a lot more fun than some of the sequels and spin-offs that came after it.

“I started ACII after finishing Mirage, and I was surprised at how the combat system is compared to Mirage. In my opinion, I actually think it's better in ACII.”

“Man what a topical post. I only recently finished off the Platinum trophy for AC2, absolutely stellar game.”

“I replayed it in 2020 for the first time since launch and was surprised at how well it holds up. I played the PS4 remaster and honestly it didn’t feel as old as I thought it would.”

While future Assassin’s Creed games may strive to live up to the legacy of Assassin’s Creed II, I’ll be surprised if any can even hold a candle to Ubisoft’s masterpiece.
