Admittedly, release updates on Batgirl were thin on the ground but we certainly didn’t expect the film to get cancelled which is exactly what happened this week. HBO Max pulled the plug on a number of original projects including DC’s Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Hunt.
Warner Bros. blamed the changes on a “strategic shift,” which doesn’t really tell us very much at all. Naturally, fans began to worry about the futures of other HBO Max Originals including James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker but the director has put fans’ minds to rest after issuing an update.
Batgirl will soon appear in Gotham Knights. Check out the character in action in this gameplay trailer below.
One fan took to Twitter to ask Gunn if season two of the show was safe given HBO Max’s new approach to their DC output but the director soon replied saying, “Yes guys. Calm down.” Phew, that’s a relief.
The most shocking thing about Batgirl’s cancellation is that filming had completed on the $90 million project. It’s thought that Batgirl was being edited in post-production. For a studio to cancel a film at such a late stage in the project is highly unusual so it’s unsurprising that fans presumed that any HBO Max project could be next to hit the chopping block.

Season two of Peacemaker is likely a long way off. Gunn also revealed on Twitter that filming wasn’t set to commence until 2023 which means that the very earliest the series could land is late 2023, but 2024 is perhaps more likely. At the moment, Gunn is busy with post-production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 which is set to be released 5 May, 2023. I wonder who we’ll see cameo in Peacemaker’s upcoming season. I’m sure Gunn’s got something good up his sleeve.
