Payday 3 devs explain and apologise for 'critical error' at launch

Payday 3 developers have explained and apologised for a 'critical error' which affected the game's launch.

It has been almost two months since the launch of Payday 3 but it appears as though developer Starbreeze is still picking up the pieces of its disastrous launch.

Released in September this year, Payday 3 was expected to be an exciting new installment in the much-loved series. However, thanks to a less-than-smooth launch which saw several issues as well as a lack of updates, the developers are still apologising to customers and fans.

This was seen in a recent development update from Starbreeze featuring lead producer Andreas Häll-Penninger.

"A lot of you want to know why this happened and what we've done to make sure we don't end up in this situation again," Häll-Penninger said. "To make a long, complicated, and technical story short, we found a critical error in our backend update pipeline just after the game went live."

He continued, "As a result of this, there was a significant risk that any update we made could affect the player saves and progression. We had to ensure that the test environment functioned as intended before we could proceed with publishing the update. We have no reason to want to delay updates for this long."

He ended with an apology: "It was frustrating for both us and you, the players, that the launch went the way it did. We've taken the necessary steps to make sure that our updates will not cause more problems than they fix. Thank you for continuing to support us and playing Payday 3."

It wasn’t all doom and gloom however as Häll-Penninger also went on to announce the upcoming legacy heists that will be taken from Payday 2 and added to Payday 3. He also assured players that despite seeing the heists before, they will have stark differences in the latest instalment.

"Payday 3 is quite different from Payday 2 mechanics-wise so bringing these heists to the third game means that we've had to make some changes to fit the new criminal dawn of heisting," he explained. "But don't worry, the changes aren't going to make the heist less recognisable."

Despite a rocky start, it appears as though Starbreeze is working hard on making Payday 3 the game it should have been back in September. It’s never too late, hey!
