Overwatch introduces series' first non-binary hero

Overwatch introduces series' first non-binary hero

Overwatch is getting its first non-binary hero!

In this day and age inclusion is important in just about every form of entertainment, whether it be TV series’, movies, video games and more. It’s always nice to find a well-developed character relatable to you in some way.

Whatever we may or may not think about Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch series, characters such as Baptiste, Lifeweaver, Pharah, Soldier 76 and Tracer have led the way in LGBTQIA characters, and now a new character joins those ranks with the series’ first non-binary hero.

Check out the Overwatch 2 trailer below!

As spotted by The Gamer, the new hero in question is Venture who is a damage type and has the pronouns they/them. Overwatch artist, Ana Martínez, confirmed the news. Ana tweeted artwork for two new characters, Venture as well as Space Ranger following their Blizzcon 2023 reveal over the weekend. Ana said that both of the newly announced characters are: "near and dear to our hearts, so excited to share more about them soon."

In response to the tweet, a Twitter follower asked what Venture’s pronouns are, to which Ana Martínez replied: “Venture's pronouns are they/them.” Venture is Canaidan and is said to be a "swashbuckling archeologist," with lead concept artist Darly Tan saying that the character has an "unquenchable thirst for past treasures and hidden secrets.”

What’s more, a new map and mode were also announced with the map being called Hanaoka and the mode Clash. At this time, details on the new map are vague. We do know that it will be inspired by the assault map Hanamura, but will take place in a “new section” of Hanamura. As for the Clash mode, it will require opposing teams to complete five objectives to claim victory.

The two new characters, map and mode will be released sometime in 2024. Overwatch 2 is free-to-play and is out now on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
