'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Was Nearly A Film Trilogy, Says Writer

Obi-Wan Kenobi was perhaps the most anticipated Star Wars release in recent years and in the blink of an eye, it’s already over. I think most people would agree with me when I say it was a rather mixed affair.

Bookended by strong opening and closing episodes, Obi-Wan Kenobi had a disappointingly meandering middle but given just how good the finale was, I could almost overlook it. I’d love to see the story continue (and I don’t mean in A New Hope) and that could well be on the cards, as Obi-Wan Kenobi was originally planned as a film trilogy.

In a recent interview with The Direct, writer Stuart Beattie revealed that he originally wrote Obi-Wan Kenobi as a film trilogy but the project was later cancelled following the underwhelming reception to Solo: A Star Wars Story. With the formation of Disney Plus, the idea was then revived as a miniseries.

Beattie said, “I wrote the film that they based the show on. I spent like a year, year-and-a-half working on it and then, when the decision was made not to make any more spin-off films after Solo came out, I left the project and went on to other things. [Screenwriter Joby Harold] came on and took my scripts and turned it from two hours into six. So, I did not work with them at all, I just got credit for the episodes because it was all my stuff."

Beattie went on to explain that there were "three stories because there’s three different evolutions that the character has to make in order to go from Obi-Wan to Ben." Interesting. Despite the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi was always intended to be a miniseries, most of the cast would be up for another season. If we have another two movies worth of untold stories, that prospect becomes even more promising. Come on Disney, you know what to do.
