Nintendo Switch Update Finally Adds Basic Feature, Five Years Later

One year at a time

The latest system update for Nintendo Switch has finally added a basic feature that other consoles have had for quite some time. And it only took half a decade.

Released back in 2017, the Nintendo Switch is undeniably one of the greatest consoles in terms of portability, variety, and general versatility. But good lord does it suffer from the most uninspired and completely un-Nintendo UI.

For five years now players have been forced to choose between two home screen themes: black or white. That's your lot. You were hoping for custom themes that make use of some of Nintendo's most beloved characters and locations? Keep dreaming.

While the latest update (version 14.0.0.) still hasn't added anything quite as exciting as Mario or Zelda themes, it has introduced a new feature that finally lets users put a touch more of themselves into their console.

As confirmed in the patch notes, users can now "group" software into various categories on their home screen, essentially putting together their favourite gamers by genre or style and decluttering the home screen in the process.

Users can create up to 100 different groups, with up to 200 titles in each group. You can group games by genre, developer, franchise, or even hours played - totally up to you. The process is easy enough, but to find out exactly what you need to do simply head to Nintendo's support page.

Last September Nintendo finally added some pretty basic Bluetooth functions in an update. This year it's grouped folders. Who knows? Maybe 2023 will be the year we get those custom themes. I can dream.
