As you may already know, Nintendo has been re-releasing their old console controllers for fans that want to play games from previous Nintendo eras. Of course, if you want to play a Gamecube game on Switch, you’re going to feel much more at home on a Gamecube controller - that just makes sense. However, Nintendo doesn’t seem to be translating the layout of the new Nintendo 64 controller to the Switch very well, and fans aren’t happy.
In a thread of tweets by Shiori Ishimaru, it’s explained that the Switch’s N64 games will feel very odd to play without buying and using the official controller. The images showing fans where each button will correspond to on the Switch is incredibly confusing, especially to those like Ishimaru who think they’ve worked out a better solution.

According to the poster: “Based off the Nintendo 64 Controller layout, the layout should be as follows: ‘Y’ on Switch is ‘B’ on 64. ‘B’ on Switch is ‘A’ on 64. ‘X’ on Switch is C-Pad Left on 64. ‘A’ on Switch is C-Pad Down on 64.”

The problem here is that the way Nintendo has mapped the controls on the Switch will make the N64 games harder to play. The games will essentially play the same as their original releases, and of course, developers of the time make sure that the games felt good on the controller that came with the N64. The Switch’s layout might make it more difficult to enjoy older games if you’re not buying the N64 controller too.
Sadly Nintendo doesn’t even allow players to alter controls themselves on their console. You cannot remap it to make it play the way you want - so if you’re unhappy with how Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie plays when they hit the Expansion Pass, sadly there isn’t much you can do to change it.
