Next Assassin's Creed Has A Very Different Setting, Says Insider

They made a lot of sacrifices to get this one made

The setting for the next Assassin's Creed adventure has potentially been leaked, and it sounds like we're going somewhere fans have wanted to go for a long time.

Through the magic of the Animus, modern day Assassin's Creed characters have been able to explore some of the most fascinating periods in human history, from Ancient Egypt to Victorian London. Of course, the 15-year-old series still has plenty of important eras to explore.

According to ACG on Twitter, who previously leaked Far Cry Primal, the next Assassin's Creed adventure will be centered around the Aztecs.

Now, this seems like such an inspired idea that I'm amazed we haven't seen it in Assassin's Creed already. The Aztecs were an ancient civilization of people in central Mexico in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. History tells us that they were highly advanced in the fields of science and math compared to other cultures of the time - and were the first people to have a compulsory education for everyone. Fun fact for you there.

The temples (or Teocalli) would no doubt make for some fascinating locations to explore in-game, and tie in rather nicely with the Assassin's Creed series' take on ancient Gods actually being super advanced lifeforms from beyond the stars known as Isu.

As cool as this sounds, take it with a pinch of salt for now. Especially since this doesn't really match up with the previous rumours we've been hearing.

Reports from earlier this year suggest that at least one Assassin's Creed game in development is set in Baghdad. However, both Bloomberg and Eurogamer claim this is a smaller, standalone adventure which will return the franchise to its stealth-action roots.

It could be that the Aztec Empire is the first port of call for Assassin's Creed Infinity, the previously announced live-service game that, according to rumours, will serve as a massive online platform that evolves over time. Very little is known about this new game at the moment, but it's been suggested that Infinity will serve as a hub for multiple time periods and adventures. If true, it could very well star with Aztecs.

Fortunately, we don't have long to wait to find out. Ubisoft confirmed last month it will be "unveiling the future of Assassin's Creed" during a special livestream event currently scheduled for September. It's not entirely clear what this future will be, but we can safely assume the next game in the series will be revealed at last.
