New Dragon Ball Z game officially announced

A new Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game is in development, Bandai Namco has confirmed.

Weebs everywhere, rejoice. A new Dragon Ball Z game is in the works, and it’ll revisit a game series which hasn’t seen a traditional release since 2010.

As TheGamer reports, fans can prepare themselves for a new Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi game. Bandai Namco revealed a trailer for the title during the second day of the DRAGON BALL Games Battle Hour 2023 event, which admittedly doesn’t give too much away. At first, the footage of the first game shown on a CRT TV seemed to imply that we could be getting a remake. However, text shown at the end of the trailer says that “A New Budokai Tenkaichi Begins”, so it seems fairly certain that we finally have Budokai Tenkaichi 4 on our hands.

For those unfamiliar, Budokai Tenkaichi is a series of fighting games with a third-person camera perspective. The previous instalments had some absolute huge rosters that can easily put Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s number of characters to shame - 2007’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3 included 98 characters in a total of 161 forms. Right now, it’s not clear if the new game will be as massive as this, but as you’d expect, Goku is here, and he can transform into his Super Saiyan Blue form.

At the time of writing, it’s not been confirmed what platforms the game will be releasing on, nor do we have any indication of a release window. It seems like a very safe bet to say that it’ll be coming to new-gen consoles, though.

Given that the series’ last traditional game, Tenkaichi Tag Team, released well over a decade ago, it seemed way more likely that we’d get a sequel to 2018’s successful Dragon Ball FighterZ before a new Budokai Tenkaichi game, but this is a very pleasant surprise. Hopefully we’ll get some more updates on the title soon.
