Mirror's Edge-Style Project In Unreal Engine 5 Is Looking Brilliant

The 3D environment artist hopes to create "something playable" by the time he's finished working on this Mirror's Edge inspired cityscape.

Mirror’s Edge seems to have two distinct effects on people. In the first instance, you may have completely forgotten that the game exists. The other? Praising the game for being ahead of its time. Developed by DICE and released in 2008, Mirror’s Edge is a platforming action-adventure, that was available on both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and later on Microsoft Windows.

Inspired by action films including Casino Royale and The Bourne Identity, Mirror’s Edge takes a parkour-style approach to platforming as Faith Connors - a parkour courier - secretly delivers messages throughout a heavily surveilled city. Mirror’s Edge was by no means a bad game, yet it failed to have the same lasting impact as fellow 2008 titles such as Dead Space and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Take a look at gameplay from the dinosaur inspired Instinction, created using Unreal Engine 5, down below.

In recent years, Mirror’s Edge has developed a cult-like following for its original first-person take on the age-old platforming genre and if you’re a member of that fan club, we have a treat for you. Originally built in Unreal Engine 3, Tokyo-based 3D environment artist Thomas Ripoll Kobayashi recently remade the game’s city called... The City... in Unreal Engine 5 and the results are a thing of beauty.

Accompanying the four screenshots which were posted to Twitter, Thomas wrote “Current progress of UE5 scene inspired by Mirror’s Edge.”

The images perfectly capture The City’s blue and white urban minimalism and it’s easy to imagine Faith leaping into action, jumping and sliding her way through the immaculate streets to her top secret destination. Thomas went on to say “I’d like to have something playable, at least just the possibility to move around. [I’m] not sure about a parkour system though, that sounds beyond my knowledge.”

We don’t want to be greedy because Thomas’ project already looks like it’s well on its way to being something great, but how incredible would a Mirror’s Edge remake be? We’ll just have to keep wishing those remake rumours finally come through.
