With the video game market being very cutthroat, it is no wonder that so many titles are cancelled in their early stages.

That was the case for Minecraft competitor Hytale which, despite being in development for over a decade, was unceremoniously cancelled back in June by Riot Games after it purchased the rights for the game from Hypixel Studios back in 2020.

With Hytale already being announced and teased to fans, it was understandably heartbreaking news for both the excited playerbase and its developers who had put so much work into the sandbox title.

After Hypixel Studios seemingly shut after Riot Games purchased the rights to Hytale, it seemed as though the Minecraft-esque game would never see the light of day.

However, we were wrong.

Earlier this week saw fans receive the news that Hytale would not only be released, but it would launch very soon.

This comes after Hypixel Studios bought back the rights for Hytale from Riot Games and aims to publish it itself.

The news came courtesy of Hypixel co-founder Simon Collins-Laflamme who took to Twitter to share the exciting update.

"Huge thanks to Riot for working with me to make this happen,” it read.

A must-play for Minecraft fans

He added: “They wanted what’s best for players, and that’s for us to eventually play the game. This game has always been close to my heart, and I’m excited to bring it back home.

"Real talk: Hytale isn’t some polished AAA release waiting in the wings. It’s messy. It’s janky. And there’s a lot of work to be done. My plan? Get it out to you as soon as possible. No more waiting.

You’ll get to play it, rough edges and all. It won’t be perfect on day one. My hope is that together, we’ll shape it into something truly special. Thanks for believing in Hytale. Time to get to work."

Since then, the official Hytale account has been sharing all sorts of new-looks at the game including 16-minutes of gameplay footage which was shared overnight.

There is no denying that Hytale originated as a multiplayer Minecraft server but it is also clear that its developers have put their heart and soul into bringing this upcoming sandbox title to fans of the game.

We may not have an official release date for Hytale but with its developers working beyond the clock, it is safe to say that it will not be long before we finally get our hands on it and it will make it all the more special remembering that we almost did not get it at all.
