Metal Gear Solid 4 Remake Teased, And I Hope It's True

Konami, please.

Konami has made yet another tease at a Metal Gear Solid 4 remake, and this time it could be serious.

After laying dormant for a number of years, Konami brought back the Metal Gear Solid series with the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 back in 2023.

The collection included the first three Metal Gear Solid games, as well as the original two Metal Gear titles as well. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was absent from the collection, though.

However, given the fact that the collection was titled “Volume 1”, many fans have theorised that the next release could include some missing Metal Gear Solid titles, including the fourth game.

At the moment, you can only play Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3, so it’s a game that many fans have not had a chance to play on original hardware.

With Konami also releasing Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a ground-up remake of the third game that tries to be as faithful to the original game as much as possible, the possibility of a Metal Gear Solid 4 remake in the same vein is also on the table.

A Metal Gear Solid 4 Remake Isn't Necessarily Off The Table

Speaking to Real Sound, producer Noriaki Okamura showed interest in revisiting the 2008 classic.

“We might work on another remake, or we might try creating something entirely new,” Okamura says (Thanks Metal Gear Network for the translation).

“The Metal Gear series is basically a piece of video game history, it spans everything from pixel art to film-like presentation, so the ideal approach to remaking or representing each title is different. We don’t intend to apply the exact methodology we used for MGS Delta to every game. We want to consider the best approach for each one individually.

“The hardware of that era required some extremely unique design choices to get good 3D performance with the tech available, and MGS4 ended up with some pretty unusual code because of that… Bringing it over now would be a real challenge, I think.”

Indeed, the PlayStation 3 has a rather odd architecture which makes it difficult to port games to other systems and hardware.

Although efforts are being made to improve PS3 emulation, it might still be tricky for Konami to bring Metal Gear Solid 4 to modern platforms.

Still, it’s promising news that Konami still has the game in mind when bringing back its classic titles. It’s possible that might be why a Master Collection Volume 2 might be taking a while to be released, as the publisher wishes to get the game working perfectly before releasing it.
