Metal Gear Solid 3 remake teased in mysterious video

It's alleged that game dev studio Virtuos posted a video to their YouTube channel which seemed to hint at a MGS3 remake announcement.

It’s been a wild 24 hours for Metal Gear Solid fans. In the span of a day, it seemed almost certain that a fan-favourite game was getting a remake, before everything immediately came crashing down, and now everyone’s just a bit confused.

In case you missed the mayhem, as reported by Eurogamer, it’s alleged that yesterday (30 October), a video briefly appeared on Chinese game studio Virtuos’ YouTube channel, which appeared to be a teaser for a Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake. There’s no evidence of this video anywhere on the studio’s channel now, but the supposed teaser quickly began circulating on Twitter.

In case you missed it, Metal Gear publishers Konami have been very busy lately with Silent Hill - check out the trailer for the upcoming Silent Hill 2 remake below.

All fans had to go on was the visual of some fancy high-definition trees and some morse code. The morse code is where things got interesting, as it apparently translates to “December 8, 1964”. As MP1st writes, 1964 is the year that MGS3 is set, and 8 December, of course, is the date of this year’s Game Awards. Piecing the two together, it initially seemed that the studio may have inadvertently teased an upcoming remake announcement.

After further investigation though, it was discovered that those HD trees actually originated from an Unreal Engine 5 trees pack from Quixel - the clips in the alleged teaser can be found in a video on the company’s Instagram account. As such, it appeared that the whole thing may have been a hoax.

However, it’s still not known where exactly the morse code came from, and Virtuos is yet to comment on the situation. Interestingly, the studio recently released a day in the life video on their channel which is still there for all to see, in which The Art of Metal Gear Solid book can be spotted sat on an artist’s desk. So, it doesn’t seem totally unreasonable to suggest that they might actually be working on something Metal Gear-related, but whether this mysterious morse code teaser video is anything to do with that is another matter.
