Mass Effect fans aren’t feeling particularly confident about the upcoming release of Mass Effect 5, and it’s pretty easy to see where they’re coming from given everything that’s led up to this point.
BioWare has been in a bit of a downward spiral ever since they were acquired by Electronic Arts.
Although there have been some bright spots here and there, like the financial and critical success of Dragon Age: Inquisition, you also have the resounding failures of titles such as Anthem, Mass Effect: Andromeda, and, of course, Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

However, folks over on the r/masseffect subreddit seem to be even more down on the next Mass Effect than the rest of us (although it might have a little bit to do with BioWare’s last development update on the game).
“If it’s as ambitious as Gamble is making it out to be, it’ll probably be like four years [away],” commented user Jamalofsiwa.
“I just pray the writers of Veilguard don’t touch it and Mary Demarle has a tight reign on things.”
“Let's hope BioWare learned the lessons from Andromeda and Anthem... and that there is an actual decision making process in place,” replied user RyanBLKST.

This follows on from news directly from BioWare themselves back in 2023, in which general manager Gary McKay revealed that they would be “eliminating approximately 50 roles at BioWare” following the financial failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
Yeah, not exactly the best start to things, is it?
To be fair, McKay did follow this up by stating that “we trust that we have the right leaders and team in place with vision, passion, and proven track records to deliver world-class Dragon Age and Mass Effect experiences that our fans will love”, but it did little to help relieve any of the fanbase’s doubts.
Here’s hoping they can deliver, because at this point, they need to. I highly doubt EA will keep the studio open any longer if not.
