Marvel Rivals is approaching its second anniversary later this year, but it’s about to have a new challenger: Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls.
The new fighting game published by Sony Interactive Entertainment will pit a large roster of Marvel heroes and villains against each other, harking back to the good old days of Marvel Vs Capcom.
Combine that with upcoming film releases like Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Avengers: Doomsday, and Marvel fans are eating well this year. They’re almost spoilt for choice.
With two fantastic Marvel games fighting for your affection, it’d be hard to pick just one, especially since they have far from casual gaming experiences. Here’s how you can decide which one is for you.

For starters, both Marvel Rivals and Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls have very high skill ceilings. Marvel Rivals is all about working as a team, which can be easier said than done unless you’re talking to your party through a microphone. Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls will depend solely on your own skill and patience, as you master combos and learn your counters.

The winner here might surprise you; it’s Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls. Characters have far less to manage than Marvel Rivals, which could give you six or seven abilities to monitor, and with only four directions to go in, Marvel Tokon won’t force you to study map layouts for best positioning.
For newbies, there’s even auto-combos to give you a fighting chance, though these shouldn’t be relied upon if you want to get better at the game.
Now let’s talk about pricing. There’s a very clear winner here, so let’s not beat around the bush. Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls will cost $59.99/£59.99 for the Standard Edition, $84.99/£79.99 for the Deluxe Edition, and finally $99.99/£94.99 for the Ultimate Edition. Marvel Rivals…is free. If affordability matters to you, the latter is what we’d go with.

In terms of character rosters, it’ll all depend on who you’d rather play as. Both games will likely have characters you naturally gravitate towards, and eventually you’ll learn who your ‘main’ is.
Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls might have the edge here though, as all characters roughly play the same way. Sure, they have different combos and abilities, but the core mechanics remain the same.
Marvel Rivals gives each character a star rating, and unless you’ve got the time and patience to learn, the highest-rated characters will probably be a no-go for you. Spider-Man, for instance, has a steep learning curve despite being such a naturally approachable character.
It’ll ultimately depend on who your favourite is, but Marvel Rivals currently has the bigger roster, whereas Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls has the more accessible roster.
Deciding between both games is certainly a tough call, but there’s no harm in trying both and seeing what you think. The open-beta demo for Marvel Tokon Fighting Souls is available right now ahead of its August 6 launch, and Marvel Rivals is always free-to-play.
