Marvel has unveiled a new Wolverine in a real plot twist, because it’s a rivalry renewed with a blast from the past.
Wolverine is one of the most popular comic book characters of all time, whether it’s on paper pages, the silver screen in the latest MCU production, or in a Disney Plus animated series.
Wolverine, aka Logan, made his Marvel Comics debut in October 1974 as a cameo in The Incredible Hulk #180 before making his full appearance in the following issue. Since that time, fans have continued to fall for the ever-popular member of the X-Men.
Over the years, nothing ever truly stays the same in the world of comic books, and Wolverine is no exception, having seen many iterations of the sharp-clawed Adamantium badass.

However, there’s an old saying that goes “The more things change, the more they stay the same,” which could be a perfect analogy for a new comic book series, The Last Wolverine.
As brought to our attention by ComicBook, Wolverine’s first ever enemy has returned, and not only that, in a shocking plot twist, it’s the new Wolverine.
The enemy in question is Wendigo, an indigenous werewolf-like spirit that possesses its host and turns them into sinister and powerful physical beings. When the Wendigo achieves peak power, it is practically impossible to kill, even for Wolverine.
Wolverine first encountered Wendigo in The Incredible Hulk #181 and later in the Uncanny X-Men series. Now, Wendigo is back in The Last Wolverine, written by Saladine Ahmed, with artwork from Edgar Salazar and Martin Cóccolo.

“What happened to Wolverine? Ten years later, the people of Vancouver cheer a new hero: the Wonderful Wolverine, a.k.a. the Wendigo, Logan’s last student,” reads the synopsis on Marvel.com.
“But what happened to Logan? A secret from Wolverine’s past will set The Last Wolverine on a mission to uphold his mentor's legacy… unless a dire threat burns it all down first!”
Thankfully, at least in the previous comic book stories, Wolverine had taken Wendigo under his wing to help him control his curse, and Leonard (the person the curse possessed) became a close ally to fight against the forces of evil.
It will be interesting to learn how Wendigo’s story plays out when the first issue of The Last Wolverine releases on 22 October 2025.
