One of the best classic Lego games has a free remake you can play

Lego fans can now play a remake for one of the best classic games in the franchise, completely free to play in your browser.

While I absolutely love some more recent releases like Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and Lego Voyagers, the best Lego games of my childhood are still among some of my most treasured memories.

Lego Racers is one of these formative titles, which occupied quite a large part of my brain when I was seven years old.

Think of it as like ‘Mario Kart but with Lego’, with each track and racer based around a certain theme that Lego was selling at the time. So you’d race on a track based on Pirates, before moving to an Adventurers set, and then a Space set, and so on.

The game is now available for free in your web browser, which you can play to your heart’s content. For legal purposes, it’s been retitled to “Step On It”, but don’t be fooled by the name. It is fully the original Lego Racers in all its glory.

This re-release has some additional features that you can only play in this version of the game though, including an online multiplayer mode where you and five other players can compete across any of the game’s circuits.

All of the content in the original game is available to you from the beginning, so you don’t need to go through and win every circuit just to unlock additional tracks and racers, and there are also a few other enhancements which you can toggle on and off.

These improvements include rebalanced items and shortcuts, as well as adjusted AI of the enemy racers to make them a little more aggressive and difficult.

The project was made possible thanks to the efforts by isledecomp’s decompilation work, who also worked on the Lego Island browser remake which can also be played for free.

You couldn’t make Lego Racers in 2026

Lego Racers was truly a product of its time, and I’m not convinced that you could make a game like this in 2026 without fundamentally changing what made the original game so charming.

For starters, the game was incredibly unbalanced. There were four types of power-ups you could pick up, with each power-up having four tiers of strength depending on how many white bricks you collected during a race, but it didn’t matter.

The only power-up you actually needed was one green brick and three white bricks, which essentially allowed you to teleport a significant distance across the track. Unbalanced, but incredibly fun.

I also feel like Lego wouldn’t do something like this in 2026 based on the types of themes it sells now. Lego makes a lot more money on licenced IPs rather than its own properties, which is why you see a lot more Lego Star Wars or D.C. than the themes that were popular back in 1999.

For this reason, a potential Lego Racers 3 would probably include these properties in there, and I’m not convinced you could do it without it feeling like a product.

And yes, I know Lego 2K Drive exists. It’s pretty ‘okay’ as a Lego racing game, but it’s certainly not a Lego Racers spiritual successor.
