Kingdom Come Deliverance has finally been upgraded for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, bringing a suite of enhancements that make it worthy of a replay, or in my case a first time playthrough.

I never played Kingdom Come Deliverance when it came out but I remember it being very divisive.

Players either loved it or hated it but it still performed well enough to get a sequel, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. Now the sequel piqued my interest but I decided to hold off and wait until I’d played the first game.

I’m glad I did because I recently went hands-on with the new-gen version of Kingdom Come Deliverance, which launches today on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. The new version is a free upgrade for those with an existing copy of the game.

While I haven’t rolled credits yet I’ve spent hours venturing through the countryside, engaged in several deadly duels and spent more time than I probably should have beaten up locals who look at me funny.

Like I said before I remember Kingdom Come Deliverance being very divisive at launch, and while I’ve given it a good go I’m afraid it’s not my cup of tea. However, I have nothing but nice things to say about the enhancements the new-gen version brings with it.

Aside from faster load times, which is always a plus, the biggest upgrade this new version brings with it is superb graphical fidelity.

I’ve seen the before-and-after comparisons and they don’t do justice to how good the game looks now. Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is still the superior game when it comes to visuals but the new-gen version makes the graphical leap much less drastic. I’d imagine it’ll make playing both games one after another feel more rewarding.

Character models still look a little choppy at times and I wasn’t a fan of how static they look during conversations but you can let it slide, as it’s not a full-on remake.

What matters most is what’s in front of the player looks good, and staring out at the horizon through Henry’s eyes is what carried me through so much of the game, even when the gameplay just wasn't agreeing with me.

For new players it’s the perfect time to jump into the series and see what you think of it, and for existing players this is a version worth replaying.

The new-gen version of Kingdom Come Deliverance is available now for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S users.
