It’s been a few years now since the release of Joker. The 2019 psychological thriller was generally pretty well received - a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes might not be groundbreaking, but it could be a lot worse (and it currently has a much more generous audience score of 88%).

Anyway, with a worldwide box office revenue of over $1 billion, it seemed like it’d only be a matter of time before we’d be getting some kind of follow-up movie, and lo and behold, it’s now been confirmed. As reported by IGN, not only has the existence of a sequel been made official, but we also have its title.

Before we get into it, take a look at this incredible deleted scene from The Batman, featuring Joker.

The news was revealed by Joker director and co-writer Todd Phillips on Instagram, who will once again be writing the sequel alongside Scott Silver. Accompanying a photo of Phillips reading the movie’s script (which, no, you can’t make out any words from - I tried), he also posted a photo of the script cover, unveiling the title Joker: Folie á Deux.

‘What does that mean?’ Glad you asked. Folie á deux (or ‘folly of two’) is a psychological disorder also known as shared psychotic disorder, or shared psychosis. It refers to when symptoms of delusions or hallucinations are “transmitted” from one person to another (thanks, Wikipedia).

Other than that, absolutely no other plot details have been released, but rest assured that the movie is in the works. There’s also been no release window given, so we can probably assume that it’s going to be a while away yet.

There’s no doubt that fans of Joker will be happy to see him return to the big screen. As excellent as The Batman was, the iconic villain didn’t really make much of an appearance (apart from in that creepy deleted scene, of course). Hopefully we don’t have too long to wait.
