If you’re a fan of Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us, this new game hitting Steam might be right up your alley.

The apocalyptic themes of Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us are a great fit for a video game, as evident by how popular they are.

But one that also uses ancient folklore to drive its story seems like a great fit for this new adventure game coming to Steam later this year.

That’s what Vessels of Decay is doing, anyway. It’s a retro-inspired action-adventure indie set in post-apocalyptic Scandinavia that's been in development since 2022.

Developed by Simon Jakobsson and Aurora Punks, and published by Headup, Vessels of Decay is set in a fallen world, where ancient creatures have risen and now roam the land.

The game follows the story of two ordinary people—Freja and Mud, who explore this ruined earth and confront mythological creatures.

“The battered ruins of a once-modern society clash with the renewed growth of nature – and of the supernatural,” reads the official description.

“Explore a uniquely Scandinavian setting through a mix of reflective melancholy, exploration, and fast-paced action.”

Vessels of Decay has “a dynamic combat system” with “unique finishers”, which sounds like it’s using a combat system similar to fighting games. From what we’ve seen, the fighting moves look pretty swish.

Fighting ferocious monsters makes up a core part of the game’s many boss fights, which are split into multiple stages and each have unique themes to them.

Vessels of Decay does not have a confirmed release date yet, but Headup has slated it for release sometime in the summer.

It also has a free demo available at the moment, if you want to check it out for yourself.

If you want to keep up with development on the game, check out Vessels of Decay on Steam and follow the page.
