In the Harry Potter universe, it is assumed by many that every member of Slytherin has a penchant for the dark arts, especially as many would go on to become Death Eaters.

However, throughout the events of Hogwarts Legacy, which is set over a century before the Harry Potter series begins, players get to meet one Slytherin who goes against all that the House stands for.

Check out just one of the trailers for Hogwarts Legacy below!

It is Ominis Gaunt, of course.

Ominis was a pure-blood wizard, a member of the House of Gaunt and a Slytherin student at Hogwarts.

Despite this, he refuses to take part in the Dark Arts, especially after being tortured by his family when they used the Cruciatus Curse against him as a child.

Born blind and with an understandable distrust against his family, Ominis displayed a kind heart and later in life, it is believed that he separated himself from the wizarding world as much as possible, choosing to live a quiet and kind existence.

However, it is believed that Ominis is indeed related to none other than Voldemort himself, despite this not having been officially confirmed by J.K. Rowling.

Many fans believe that Ominis was related to Marvolo, Tom Riddle’s grandfather with some even believing that they were brothers and that Marvolo took part in the torture against Ominis as a child.

If true, this would make Ominis Gaunt the great-uncle of Tom Riddle/Voldemort and many players have seemingly missed that little tidbit of information.

Taking to r/HarryPotterGame, one user posted, “Is Ominis Gaunt related to Tom Riddle?”

“Ominis Gaunt has the same last name as Voldemort's grandfather Marvolo Gaunt.

Since Marvolo Gaunt would be around the same age as Ominis, does this mean that he is most likely Voldemort's great-uncle?”

It wasn’t long before fans came forward with their own answers, with many believing this family relation to be true.

“The Wizarding World is small enough that you can assume anyone who shares the same last name and is from the same area is related in one way or another,” user Faierie1 rightfully summed up.

User raalic added, “Yes, Ominis Gaunt is directly related to Tom Riddle.

This fact makes him an extra interesting character, I think, given his alignment versus that of his great nephew.”

It is an interesting connection to say the least and shows that nature vs nurture can really play a part when it comes to Slytherin students.
