Expect a high level of interactivity

Expectations surrounding Grand Theft Auto VI are very high, with many hopefuls wanting the highly anticipated game to deliver the most impressive open-world of all-time.

Arguably, that title currently belongs to former Rockstar Games release Red Dead Redemption 2.

Crimson Desert has put up a decent fight in recent days but while its open-world is packed with content, it’s arguably less cohesive than Red Dead Redemption 2’s.

To date, fans of Grand Theft Auto have only been able to surmise what the game’s open-world might be like from trailers.

We’re yet to actually see a map or be officially informed of any of the side activities it may offer.

One new feature of GTA VI has, however, leaked online - and it bodes very well for the game’s open-world.

One Former Developer Detailed A New GTA VI Feature On LinkedIn

The feature came to light on LinkedIn where it was accidentally confirmed by a former Rockstar Games developer. It’s since been removed.

As spotted by Twitter/X user Urban_GTA_6, the individual worked as a graphics programmer at Rockstar Games from February 2020 to April 2023.

Their post detailed that they “took lead on the next generation procedural breakable glass system for vehicles and props” as well as handled “designing tools for production to capture in-game footage with extra details from our rendering systems”.

It’s the former quote that you should be paying attention to.

As for what a “next generation procedural breakable glass system” looks like in practice, we don’t yet know. That doesn’t mean that we can’t speculate.

You see, it sounds as if most in-game glass will be breakable if there’s an entire system supporting that happening. We’re talking about the likes of both car and building windows.

It also sounds a lot like the system will take into account what the glass is hit with to determine how it breaks.

It’s perhaps not unreasonable to say that many of us expected vehicle windows to be breakable as that’s hardly a new revolution.

There has, perhaps, been a fear that GTA VI’s open-world might be more scale than substance.

It’s all well and good having an enormous map to drive across but, for example, consider how lacklustre Vice City would feel if it quickly became apparent that you couldn’t really interact with any buildings.

Do players yearn to break building windows? Well, it might not be at the top of their wishlists but you should see how this implies a high level of interactivity - and that’s going to be key when it comes to whether GTA VI can indeed live up to the hype.
