Grand Theft Auto VI was, as we’re all aware, due to originally launch this year.
Rockstar Games never did actually reveal an exact original release date, instead choosing to confirm a revised one alongside a delay of the game.
GTA VI will now launch on 26 May 2026 which, admittedly, isn’t all that far away considering how long we’ve already waited.
You might think that fans are miffed about the delay and while, I’m sure, there are some who feel that way, many are actually grateful for the move.

It gives developers extra time to polish and refine the game, but that’s not why many are relieved.
It’s all to do with the fact that GTA VI’s delay has allowed other video games to shine, with many already declaring 2025 to be a landmark year.
“Hot take: 2025 has been the best year for gaming in over a decade,” wrote Reddit user MxttH88.
“Just played Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, Expedition 33 and Blue Prince back to back (all of which I consider perfect or near-perfect) and I’m honestly struggling to remember a year in recent memory as stacked as this. That’s without even mentioning Split Fiction, Doom, Oblivion, Shadows, Nightreign, and a few more big names coming later this year.”

Revo94 felt very similarly, stating, “2025 has been such a crazy good year for video games and we are not even halfway that even 2026 and 2027 will be hard to surpass it as the best year of this generation,” going on to list many of the same titles as MxttH88.
I agree that 2025 has been a stellar year so far. Split Fiction is perhaps my personal favourite release, and I’m counting down the days until Ghost of Yōtei is mine.
For me, it’s a tad harder to say it’s the best year in over a decade.
It’s pretty hard to forget 2023, when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Resident Evil 4 were amongst those vying for awards.

It’s hard to deny though that GTA VI’s shift has allowed many unexpected successes to shine.
“We just eating good,” added johncitizen69420, reminding people that “next year is already shaping up to be a banger” too with GTA VI, Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, and State of Decay 3 all on the way.
I have to say, for a generation with “no games” as people love to say, this era has delivered some stellar titles year after year.
2025’s Game of the Year race is going to be yet another tight one.
