Those excited for Grand Theft Auto VI are suddenly finding themselves a lot less excited to buy the game at launch following recent video game price hikes.

Nintendo hit us with one of the best Nintendo Directs in recent memory on Wednesday… and then immediately killed any sense of hype they’d managed to build by revealing that some Nintendo Switch 2 games will cost $80/£75 at launch.

People hoping to buy Nintendo Switch 2 didn’t take the news too well, but fans hoping to get their hands on Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI at launch immediately realised that this price hike was going to have a knock-on effect for the rest of the gaming industry.

Over on the r/GTA6 subreddit, the commenters in a thread detailing the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement are already preparing for the worst.

“lol only Nintendo can get away with s**t like that with no backlash,” commented user BigZi05.

“I’m fully prepared for gta 6 at $100 now.”

“I ain't no simp,” replied user BurningOasis.

“All these people saying they'd pay whatever price... What a silly way to think, and to post it for companies to see, no less.”

There’s been a lot of talk over the past year about GTA VI being the first game to break the $70/£70 video game price barrier, but many still held out hope that Take-Two wouldn’t be willing to endure the resulting negative PR.

However, now that Nintendo has willingly broken the seal and taken that bullet for them, I do think the chances of GTA VI being sold at a premium are much, much higher.

The real question at this point is whether or not doing so would actually be a profitable decision on Take-Two’s behalf.

That might initially sound ridiculous, but think about it: what did Take-Two make the most money from? The base sales of GTA V… or its microtransactions?

Either way, they’re doubtlessly watching the incredibly negative reception Nintendo is enduring right now extremely closely. Hopefully they’re not willing to continue this pricing trend, because other publishers will doubtlessly follow suit if they do.
