Surprise! Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is getting a VR version, as announced by Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook Connect 2021.
What a sentence. Let’s bring it back for a moment. Facebook owns the company that develops Oculus Rift and Oculus Quest headsets — excuse me, it’s not Facebook any longer. In the conference, Zuckerberg also revealed the company’s new name.
“To reflect who we are and what we hope to build,” explained the CEO of Meta, Inc. The internet entrepreneur continued to say that the name Facebook doesn’t cover everything that the company does and aims to do, and Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp will still retain their names. “But over time, I hope we are seen as a metaverse company.”

Ok. One of the novel metaverse outings "where instead of just viewing content - you are in it” that Meta Inc would like to deliver is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for the Oculus Quest 2. Unlike the remasters and the shiny new versions of Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, we know next to nothing about the upcoming re-release of the 2004 title.
“Get a new perspective on Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas as you experience (again or for the first time) one of gaming’s most iconic open worlds,” read the post on the Oculus blog. “This is a project many years in the making, and we can’t wait to show you more of it.” Without a price tag, launch window, or even a glimpse of the game in action on the platform, it’s safe to say that the VR version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is in the early stages of its development.

Earlier this month, Resident Evil 4 released for Oculus Quest 2 and enjoyed a warm reception from fans. However, there were a handful of alterations from the original game in order to remove inappropriate lines of dialogue, which did rub some up the wrong way. Given that the remaster of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was modified to take out a controversial symbol, it’s possible that San Andreas might be changed too.
