'Oblivion' Remade In Unreal Engine 5 Has Me Pining For 'The Elder Scrolls 6'

'Oblivion' Remade In Unreal Engine 5 Has Me Pining For 'The Elder Scrolls 6'

Unreal Engine 5 is some snazzy tech, I'll say that.

This jaw-dropping tour of the Imperial City - from The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - isn't lifted from The Elder Scrolls VI, if you could believe it. This demo is in fact running in Unreal Engine 5 with all of the original files from the 2006 title.

At the moment, the latest entry into the epic series of RPGs is The Elder Scrolls Online, which was released seven years ago. "ESO is a worldwide game," said Matt Firor, president of ZeniMax Online Studios, in an interview in May. "We have people from almost every country in the world logging in at some point. It's huge and it's very, very much played by a disparate group of people. It's not just 'hardcore MMO fans.' ... People are going to keep playing it and we'll keep making content for them as long as they're around."

Indeed, the studio has seen the success of the game rise continuously over recent years, and although the game has won the hearts and minds of the The Elder Scrolls community, there's still a hankering for a single-player jaunt in Tamriel once again.

While away the time in the peaceful and empty streets of the Imperial City which have been reinvigorated with gorgeous graphics - check it out below.

Now, sorcerer (or modder) Greg Coulthard has taken the assets for the Imperial City, also known as the gorgeous capital city of Cyrodiil and the Septim Empire, and put them into Unreal Engine 5. We've seen how powerful the next evolution of the engine is, with official reveals like Valley Of The Ancient and ridiculous projects like rendering three million crabs simultaneously. This reimagining of the Imperial City, however, has tugged at our heartstrings.

Oblivion is an exceptional game, and not only for its potential to spawn memes that endure the tests of time. Seeing the city in all of its glory, it's got us reminiscing over the memories of Oblivion and enthusiastic for what The Elder Scrolls VI could look like with this technology as a foundation. And astonishingly, this is a remaster thanks to a 4K texture pack layered on top of the original files, created and uploaded by modder Kuzja80. It hasn't been rebuilt or remade. It boggles the mind to consider the possibilities of classics that could get a lick of paint like this. As such, do Driver: Parallel Lines next.
