Ubisoft has just announced Warlords of New York, a surprise paid expansion for The Division 2 that's coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on March 3rd. As the name of the expansion implies, it'll see the online tactical shooter leaving its open-world version of Washington DC and returning to New York - the location of the first game in the series.

As you'd hope from an expansion that returns to the setting of the first game, Warlords of New York will finally pick up a long-dangling story thread left by 2016's The Division. Players will finally find themselves back on the hunt for rogue agent Aaron Keener.

"Keener, along with his network of Rogue Agents, is now a major threat to the burgeoning rebirth of civilization," said Ubisoft in a press release. "To track down Keener, Agents will roam the untamed living open world of Lower Manhattan; a former Dark Zone that was recently hit by a devastating hurricane that hit New York City harder than anywhere else in the US."

You can see the expansion in action below via a detailed 10-minute gameplay walkthrough. Ubisoft's grimy and gritty version of Manhattan was one of the better aspects of The Division, so I'm pretty excited at the prospect of a return trip. You can also take a look at a separate gameplay overview here.

Players will be able to work alone or with friends via online co-op as they set about this ambitious new story content. On the hunt for Keener, we'll also have to deal with four of his lieutenants. Each one has their own unique backstory, and taking down each will grant powerful new skills.

Ubisoft also confirmed that the expansion will be open world, so expect the company's typical attention to detail when it comes to recreating Lower Manhattan. A number of real-life locations, including Battery Park, Wall Street, Chinatown, and Two Bridges are set to appear.

Warlords of New York will also set a new level cap of 40, though it's important to note that players will need to be Level 30 and have reached World Tier 5 to experience the new campaign. As you'd expect, the expansion also comes with new gear, new weapons, and an "infinite" progression system.

When you've finally beaten the expansion's story content, you'll be able to fast travel between Washington and New York at will, enjoying the freshly overhauled endgame and sweeping up any remaining content at your leisure.

The new endgame is also introducing three-month-long seasons that each focus on a different target and their own shady networks of bad guys, along with unique seasonal rewards and challenges. All in all, it sounds like Ubisoft is really working to inject new life into The Division 2.

"After taking the time to hear and gather community feedback," Ubisoft said, "core gameplay enhancements have been implemented across various topics such as build diversity, gear streamlining and even more meaningful loot."

"The well-known Dark Zones from DC are also being revamped, returning to a simpler rogue mechanic. The focus is on rewarding player to player interaction, whether fighting against each other or helping each other against a tough Rogue player."
